Golden Temple – a place of spirituality and meditation

When I’m in Amritsar I will always visit the Golden Temple. It is the center of Sikhism and one of their holiest sites.

The Harmandir Sahib (House of God) as the Sikhs call the Golden Temple is located in the midst of the city. It is spiritually the most significant shrine in Sikhism. It is an open place of worship for all people from all faiths. The four entrances from all sides of the square symbolizes the Sikh belief in equality and their view that all people are welcome at this holy place. Over 150.000 people visit the Golden Temple everyday.

In the langar – a free Sikh community-run kitchen – a vegetarian meal to all visitors is offered without any discrimination. Interestingly Sikhism came up as a kind of reformation movement in Hinduism an Islam in the 16th century at the same time when the reformation of Luther started. For me it’s a spiritual and silent place for meditation.
