About 2 hours ago an enormous explosion in the port of Beirut shook the whole city.
Ein Lagerhaus am Hafen ist explodiert und die Nachrichten berichten von einer enormen Druckwelle die die ganze Stadt erschüttert hat. Mittlerweile sprechen die Nachrichten von zwei Explosionen.
In Beirut haben wir enge Verbindungen zur National Evangelical Church of Beirut und zur Near East School of Theology (NEST). Mittlerweile konnte der Nahost-Referent der Evangelischen Mission in Solidarität (ems) Kontakt zu unseren Partnern aufnehmen. Dr. Habib Badr, Pfarrer der National Evangelical Church of Beirut und Dr. George Sabra berichten ihm von großen Sachschäden in der Kirche und am Gebäude der NEST – zum Glück wurde niemand in der Gemeinde und der theologischen Hochschule verletzt.
Mit unseren Gedanken und Gebeten sind wir bei unseren Partnern in Beirut und im Libanon. Derzeit ist das Land von einer Wirtschaftskrise, von politischen Spannungen und der Corona-Pandemie tief getroffen und steht eigentlich vor einem Staatsbankrott. Um die Explosionen und ihre Heftigkeit gibt es erste Spekulationen ob das Ziel möglicherweise ein Waffenlager war.
Hoffen und beten wir, dass dies nicht der Beginn neuer militärischer Gewalt im Libanon und dem ganzen Nahen Osten ist.

A warehouse at the harbour has exploded and the news reports of an enormous shock wave that has shaken the whole city. Meanwhile, the news is talking about two explosions.
In Beirut we have close relationships to the National Evangelical Church of Beirut and the Near East School of Theology (NEST). In the meantime the Near East Liaison Officer of the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity (ems) was able to contact our partners. Dr. Habib Badr, Pastor of the National Evangelical Church of Beirut and Dr. George Sabra, Director of NEST reported to him about large material damages in the church and the building of NEST – fortunately nobody in the congregation and the theological college was hurt.
With our thoughts and prayers we are with our partners in Beirut and Lebanon. At the moment the country is deeply affected by an economic crisis, political tensions and the Corona pandemic and is actually facing national bankruptcy. There are first speculations about the explosions and their intensity whether the target might have been an arsenal.
Let us hope and pray that this is not the beginning of new military violence in Lebanon and the whole Middle East.
